In larger numbers than ever, college students want to study abroad: more than 200,000 American students are flocking to foreign universities each year, an increase of nearly 150 percent over the last decade. But many are returning to the States disillusioned or overwhelmed by the breadth of the world's problems. Can philanthropy really make a difference?

Crossing the Line

Philanthropist Abigail Disney, the grandniece of Walt Disney, made her official debut as a documentary film producer at this year's 2008 Tribeca Film Festival. Her film, Pray the Devil Back to Hell, (see clip at right), won the festival's Best Documentary Feature award. It tells the story of a grassroots movement of Liberian women—Christian and Muslim—who unite despite religious divisions to force an end to their country's civil war.
